January 2010 compared with December 2009 - Industrial producer prices up by 0.7% in euro area - Up by 0.9% in EU27

In January 2010 compared with December 2009, the industrial producer price index 1 rose by 0.7% in the euro area 2 (EA16) and by 0.9% in the EU27 2 . In December 2009 3 , prices increased by 0.1% in both zones.

In January 2010 compared with January 2009, industrial producer prices fell by 1.0% in the euro area , but rose by 0.1% in the EU27 .

These figures come from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union .

Monthly changes

In January 2010, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.2% in both the euro area and the EU27 . Prices in the energy sector rose by 2.0% and 2.4% respectively. In both zones, intermediate goods gained 0.5%, durable consumer goods 0.2% and non-durable consumer goods 0.1%. Capital goods remained stable in the euro area and increased by 0.1% in the EU27 .

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Malta (+17.2%), Denmark (+3.9%), Finland and Sweden (both +1.9%). Decreases were observed in Slovakia (?1.7%), Latvia (-0.5%), the Netherlands (-0.3%) and Ireland (-0.2%).

Annual changes

I n January 2010, compared with January 2009 , prices in total industry excluding the energy sector decreased by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU27 . Prices in the energy sector fell by 1.7% in the euro area , but rose by 1.5% in the EU27 . Intermediate goods declined by 1.5% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU27 . Non-durable consumer goods dropped by 0.8% and 0.4% respectively. Capital goods fell by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27 . Durable consumer goods rose by 0.4% and 0.8% respectively.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases in the total index were observed in Latvia (-9.8%), Lithuania (-5.6%) and Slovakia (-5.5%). The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+7.6%), the United Kingdom (+4.7%) and Romania (+3.7%).

  • The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

The weights of the Member States in the EU and euro area aggregates were published in News Release 33/2009 of 12 March 2009.

  • The euro area (EA16) includes Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.

The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).

  • Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 18/2010 of 2 February 2010. The monthly growth rate for December 2009 remains unchanged at +0.1% in the euro area, while it has been revised from 0.0% to +0.1% in the EU27. The annual growth rate remains unchanged at -2.9% in the euro area, while it has been revised from -1.7% to -1.5% in the EU27.

  • For Ireland, data in the new classification (NACE rev 2) has been estimated by Eurostat on the basis of data supplied using the old classification (NACE rev 1.1).
